Smoke Detector & Carbon Monoxide Detector Program

Working smoke alarms and carbon monoxide alarms save lives. Woodland Township residents can request assistance with home detection needs, and a department representative will contact you to schedule the next step.

Home Safety

Early warning gives families time to get out.

Smoke detectors alert occupants at the first signs of fire, while carbon monoxide detectors warn residents of a dangerous gas that cannot be seen or smelled. The goal of this program is to help Woodland Township households maintain reliable detection throughout the home.

Residents may request detector assistance, replacement guidance, or an inspection of existing devices. Detector availability may depend on current supply, program funding, and eligibility.

Detector Placement

Basic guidance for safer homes.

Every home is different, but these general guidelines help residents understand where detection is usually needed.

Smoke Alarms

Install on every level and near sleeping areas.

Smoke alarms should be installed on each level of the home and outside sleeping areas. Homes with bedrooms in separate areas may need additional alarms.

Carbon Monoxide

Place near bedrooms and follow manufacturer directions.

Carbon monoxide alarms should be located where sleeping occupants can hear them. Plug-in and battery models should always be installed according to the manufacturer instructions.

Existing Systems

Do not replace required hardwired alarms with battery-only alarms.

If your home has hardwired smoke alarms or a monitored alarm system, those systems should be maintained and tested as required.
